Conference Week President's Letter

September 30, 2024

The Flathead River Writers Conference is this week! We still have a few seats left for what I know will be an awesome weekend of uplift and interaction. Thanks to everyone who has chipped in to help!

The schedule is available at: www.authorsoftheflathead.org/conference-agenda.

Food: We're trying to hold down costs so the morning sweets, which were not touched much in previous years, will not be available this year. We will have coffee, decaf, tea, juices. Eat a good breakfast and bring your own snack. A water bottle or your own cup with closing top will help keep our eco footprint low.

Saturday lunch is on your own. Sunday lunch is catered at the conference.

I've had some questions about how to prepare for Keir Graff's Friday Workshop. Keir says, "For those in the Friday Capture Readers With Conflict, please bring 2 copies of a scene, 3-5 pages in length, from a work in progress. (A passage that includes dialogue is ideal but not essential.) Also bring a laptop or notebook and pen for in-class exercises."

There are great tips on the Authors of the Flathead Resources webpage, especially the article,

Get the most out of a Writers Conference.

Polish the Blurb, Sunday Morning, 8:00 am, replaces First Impressions. Bring 4 copies of your two-sentence elevator pitch OR a two-paragraph long pitch (double spaced) OR 2 pages of your novel/memoir/non-fiction (double spaced). You'll gather in small groups for critique and uplift.

There will not be a meeting Thursday, October 3. Instead, Kathy Dunnehoff's class will meet the 24th.

A request I received:

Hello, I am the Life Enrichment Coordinator for Edgewood Memory Care in Evergreen. I am hoping to find someone for November to be able to do an hour or so of reading for my residents. Cowboy Poetry or humorous short stories that would entertain mostly high functioning Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. If it were something Thanksgiving themed it would be even better.

See you at the conference!

Write On!
